UP Maroons edge UE Lady Red Warriors in UAAP opener

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons narrowly defeated the University of the East Lady Red Warriors 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 25-13 in their opening match of the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

UP led comfortably after two sets but UE mounted a strong comeback to win Sets 3 and 4 before UP secured victory in the decisive fifth set, snapping their seven-game losing streak from last year.

Joan Monares was pivotal with 17 points and 11 digs, while rookie Kianne Olango contributed 15 points in her debut match. Irah Jaboneta added 12 points and Nina Ytang had 11 points for the Maroons.

Coach Benson Bocboc acknowledged that his team needed adjustments as it was their first game of the season, praising Monares' leadership and the teamwork shown by the players despite a roster overhaul with more than half of the team being new players.

UP will face Far Eastern University next Wednesday, February 19 at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
