Oil spill threatens Oriental Mindoro's marine biodiversity

An oil spill in Oriental Mindoro is threatening marine biodiversity, affecting over 24,000 hectares of coral reef and potentially impacting up to 21 protected marine areas.

The spill has spread to 10 towns and poses a threat to the fishing industry, with DENR Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga warning that it could affect Philippine and global marine ecology.

As of now, the oil spill covers an area of 40 kilometers in radius, potentially reaching northern Palawan due to strong winds and waves.
