Around 66,000 stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been sent back to their home provinces since May 15, with 34,000 being seafarers and 32,000 land-based workers.
OWWA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac noted that seafarers were the majority of those who benefited from the free transportation provided.
However, locally stranded individuals and returning OFWs have been identified as among the latest COVID-19 cases in some regions, leading to the suspension of trips for LSIs to Regions VI and VIII.
Meanwhile, approximately 8,000 stranded aspiring OFWs, abandoned by their manning agencies, are refusing to return to their provinces, preferring to wait for crew changes.
OWWA has spent around P80 million to provide food for these stranded individuals since March 15 and has shouldered accommodation for about 1,000 seafarers stuck in Metro Manila.
