Philippine women gymnasts finish outside top 24 at Paris Olympics

Team Philippines concluded its women's artistic gymnastics campaign at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, July 28, with Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar all finishing outside the top 24 in the all-around qualification.

Malabuyo led among the trio with scores of 13.266 in vault, 12.500 in uneven bars, and 13.100 in floor exercise (25th), but still missed advancing to the event finals.

Jung-Ruivivar placed 40th overall with a total score of 51.099 points, while Finnegan finished 47th with 50.498 points as they all exited the competition early.

Despite their elimination, the gymnasts made history for the Philippines by being the first women to compete in the sport since Maria-Luisa Floro and Evelyn Magluyan in the 1964 Tokyo Games.

Only the top eight gymnasts qualified for each apparatus finals, while Ruivivar scored highest among them with 13.600 in vault and Malabuyo had the best score of 12.500 in uneven bars, but their scores did not make the cut.

Carlos Yulo now carries the hope of winning the country's first Olympic gymnastics medal as he advances to the men's all-around, floor exercise, and vault finals.
