Nograles files for Davao mayor, challenges Duterte family

Former Cabinet Secretary and Civil Service Commission Chairman Karlo Nograles filed his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday for mayor of Davao City, challenging ex-President Rodrigo Duterte and two other candidates.

Nograles, who is 48 years old, resigned from his position at the CSC with five years left in his term to run for mayor, citing a desire to provide Davao City with more choices and opportunities for change.

He emphasized that 'the people of Davao have the right to choose, the right choice, at this right time in our beloved city's history,' highlighting his 20 years of experience in government.

His sister Margarita 'Migs' Nograles also filed her certificate of candidacy for congresswoman in Davao's 1st District on Tuesday, challenging Rodrigo Duterte's eldest son Paolo.

The move by the Nograleses was seen as a challenge to the political leadership of the Duterte family in Davao City, rekindling memories of the long-standing rivalry between their families that dates back to the early 1990s.

In an interview after filing his COC, Nograles said he realized there are more important things than holding a position and its benefits, emphasizing Davao City as the place that inspired him to enter public service.
