Paolo Duterte condemns VP Sara’s impeachment as political persecution

Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte has condemned efforts to impeach his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte, calling them 'politically-motivated' and 'baseless', and now describes it as 'political persecution'.

In a Palace briefing on Thursday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. responded by saying that such statements from Congressman Pulong are not surprising.

Paolo Duterte accused lawmakers of rushing to gather signatures for the impeachment, with 215 lawmakers having signed the complaint based on seven grounds including betrayal of public trust and misuse of funds.

He warned that pushing forward with the impeachment could lead to dangerous consequences, citing a recent Iglesia Ni Cristo rally attended by over one million people as evidence of public frustration.

A Social Weather Stations survey from December found that 41 percent of Filipinos support Sara Duterte's impeachment, while 19 percent remain undecided.
