DOH, UP: COVID-19 cases to peak mid-September

New COVID-19 cases could peak in the middle of September, according to projections from both the Department of Health (DOH) and experts at the University of the Philippines (UP).

The DOH noted that the country has been seeing new peaks every week since July.

Dr. Ted Herbosa, a government adviser, said that despite stricter lockdowns in Metro Manila and other areas, cases are expected to reach high levels due to the highly transmissible nature of the virus variant.

UP experts project daily cases may reach 30,000 until the end of September before decreasing by October, with cumulative cases potentially surpassing four million by December if current trends continue.
