DOH: CFR lower despite surge in COVID-19 cases

The Department of Health (DOH) reported that despite a threefold increase in COVID-19 cases this year compared to 2020, the case fatality rate has decreased.

As of September 21, 2021, there were 1.47 million confirmed cases with a fatality rate of 1.47%, down from 2.47% in 2020.

The total number of cases increased by 309% this year compared to the end of 2020 when there were 472,205 recorded cases.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire attributed the decrease to improvements in the healthcare system's ability to manage higher case numbers and provide better clinical care.
