PSA honors Filipino athletes for record-breaking Olympics

The Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) hosted its annual awards night on Monday, January 27, celebrating the country's best-ever Olympic performance.

Gymnast Carlos Yulo received the Athlete of the Year award for his two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, emphasizing the collective effort behind his achievements.

The event, themed 'Golden Year, Golden Centenary,' honored a total of 117 awardees and featured former Senator Freddie Webb as keynote speaker and legendary weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz being inducted into the PSA Hall of Fame.

Yulo thanked his supporters, including Gymnastics Association of the Philippines President Cynthia Carrion and coach Aldrin Castaneda, for their unwavering support throughout his career.

Boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas received the President's Award for their bronze medals at the Paris Games, marking a momentous occasion in Philippine sports history.

Carlos also extended an olive branch to his younger brother Eldrew during post-awards interviews, acknowledging him as part of the 'next generation' of athletes with shared Olympic podium aspirations.
