OWWA trust fund depleted due to COVID-19 repatriation efforts

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration's (OWWA) collections have decreased by 46% due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting repatriation of Filipino migrant workers.

OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac stated that while investments showed positive signs in the first quarter, the second quarter is expected to be worse.

The OWWA trust fund has decreased from P19.6 billion to P18.8 billion this year.

The agency has spent P738 million on expenses related to the repatriation of OFWs, with P584 million coming from the trust fund.

The P153 million emergency repatriation fund, allocated through the General Appropriations Act (GAA), has been fully depleted.

Senator Sonny Angara acknowledged that the current situation represents the 'rainy day' for which the OWWA trust fund was intended, highlighting the necessity of its purpose during the crisis.
