DOLE mulls asking for additional funds for OFW cash aid program
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has over PHP1.1 billion remaining in its PHP2.5 billion budget for the Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) program.
As of Tuesday, the DOLE has disbursed about PHP1.4 billion to assist 145,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Initially, the program aimed to assist 150,000 OFWs with a PHP1.5 billion budget, but over 450,000 applications have been received.
The DOLE is requesting additional funds to process the remaining applications.
Affected OFWs can receive a one-time $200 cash aid through their local Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) or the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) if they are already in the Philippines.
