MMDA, House offer free rides amid transport strikes

The MMDA and the House of Representatives have collaborated to deploy vehicles offering free rides to commuters affected by transport strikes.

The transport strikes, led by Piston and Manibela, protest the December 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional jeepneys under the government's modernization program.

The free rides program has been extended until Friday, November 24, due to the continuation of transport strikes.

As of November 20, the MMDA had deployed light-duty trucks and buses in key routes, with a total of 37 vehicles from various government offices and private companies on standby.

In Manila, 122 vehicles from local agencies were also on standby to accommodate over 1,000 passengers.

The House of Representatives tapped five buses marked "rescue vehicles" for the purpose, augmenting the vehicles provided by the MMDA, local governments, and other agencies.

MMDA chairman Romando Artes thanked Speaker Martin Romualdez for helping ensure commuters would not suffer from the strikes.
