DOLE's AKAP program receives over 230K OFW aid requests

Over 230,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have sought assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment's (DOLE) "Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong" (AKAP) program.

As of April 24, 2020, Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) offices received 233,015 requests for the P10,000 one-time cash aid.

Of the total requests, 118,134 were from onsite OFWs, while the remainder were submitted by repatriated OFWs.

DOLE is considering requesting a supplemental budget as the current P1.5 billion budget for AKAP can only accommodate 150,000 OFWs.

As of April 25, 2020, 49,040 OFWs have been approved to receive the cash aid, processed within 10 working days.

These approved OFWs are equally land-based and sea-based workers, with nearly 34,000 being onsite OFWs and over 15,000 repatriated OFWs.
