Villar doubts Senate will prioritize Duterte's impeachment over campaigns

Senator Cynthia Villar on Wednesday reiterated her doubts that her colleagues will prioritize the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte over their respective electoral campaigns.

Villar questioned whether Senate Minority Leader Aquilino 'Koko' Pimentel's call for senators to focus on their constitutional duties before campaigning could be enforced, noting that seven incumbent senators are running for reelection.

She emphasized that it would be impractical for them to return from recess to conduct the impeachment trial given the timing and the Senate's adjournment without addressing the case.

Villar added that the Articles of Impeachment were transmitted on the last day of the session, which she said was out of schedule, questioning why they weren't sent earlier.

Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero has maintained that the Senate will only start the impeachment trial once it is in session and set the tentative start date for July 30.
