UST opens UAAP Season 87 with win over UE, 70-55

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) opened the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball tournament with a strong victory over the University of the East, winning 70-55 on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Nic Cabañero led UST with 14 points, while Mohamed Tounkara added 13 and Christian Manaytay contributed 10.

UST coach Pido Jarencio expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, emphasizing their strong rebounding (45-36) and assist advantages (24-12), noting the importance of teamwork and preparation for the season ahead.

The Tigers entered the season with nine new players, including Forthsky Padrigao who had five points, six rebounds, and seven assists in his debut.

Jarencio highlighted that despite early fouls, his team's willingness to work together and support each other will be key as they move forward in the season.

The Red Warriors were led by Precious Momowei with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Ethan Galang added 11 points.
