Senate OKs extending voter registration deadline

With only a week left before the September 30 deadline, Filipino voters are facing crowded registration sites and long lines.

The Senate passed a bill on Wednesday to extend voter registration until October 31 due to pandemic-related delays.

Senators have urged Comelec to extend the registration period, citing that around 28.3% of the registration period was suspended due to quarantine restrictions.

House leaders also filed a similar bill compelling Comelec to grant a one-month extension for those who have yet to register.

The House and Senate are urging Comelec to act quickly to avoid disenfranchising voters who were unable to register during lockdowns.
