Philippines summons Chinese envoy over vessels in Whitsun Reef

The Philippines summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian on Monday to express its 'utmost displeasure' over the continued presence of Chinese militia vessels in Whitsun Reef, which is within the Philippine-claimed exclusive economic zone.

Foreign Affairs acting Undersecretary Elizabeth Buensuceso cited a 2016 UN arbitral ruling that rejected China's claim to more than 80% of the South China Sea and reminded China of proper decorum after it criticized Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana for his remarks.

Former foreign secretary Albert del Rosario praised the DFA for acting on its constitutional duty to protect national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interest in the West Philippine Sea.
