Oil spill reaches Calapan fish sanctuary

An oil spill originating from a sunken tanker in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro has reached the Harka Piloto fish sanctuary in Barangay Lazareto, Calapan City.

Photos of the oil slick were given to the Calapan Fishery Management Office (FMO) by Bantay Dagat members who monitor the sanctuary near Verde Island Passage, a critical marine biodiversity center.

The Harka Piloto Fish Sanctuary is a protected area actively maintained by the community and local government.

Cleanup efforts began immediately to remove oil from the waters and shore.
