BFAR: No nationwide fish shortage from Oriental Mindoro oil spill

BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera said there will not be a nationwide shortage of fish due to the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro.

Briguera noted that while fishing output could decrease in Oriental Mindoro and nearby provinces, the national scale impact is minimal as these areas account for only 10.5% and 10.2% of total fisheries production respectively.

BFAR cited Philippine Statistics Authority data showing Oriental Mindoro's fish production was just 0.07 percent of the country’s total in 2022, with fishing activity at its peak elsewhere.
