Filipino-American Emma Malabuyo wins Asian Championships bronze to rep PH at Paris Olympics

Filipino-American gymnast Emma Malabuyo, 21, will represent the Philippines in women's gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics after securing a bronze medal finish in the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Uzbekistan last May.

Malabuyo previously competed for USA Gymnastics and won three gold medals in the City of Jesolo Trophy in 2018, but fell short during the Olympic Trials in 2021.

In 2023, Malabuyo switched federations to compete for the Philippines and secured a silver medal in the Asian Championships floor event, marking her highest placement ever for a Filipina gymnast at the championships.

Despite faltering in the 2024 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Doha, she eventually qualified through her performance at the Asian Championships.

Malabuyo's journey includes overcoming personal challenges like a shoulder injury and emotional setbacks; her family's support motivated her to achieve her Olympic dream and inspire future generations of Filipina gymnasts.

The country will have four representatives in the gymnastics event, with Aleah Finnegan, Levi Ruvivar, and Carlos Yulo completing the list.
