Gilas Women lose to Hungary, face must-win game vs Senegal

The Gilas Pilipinas Women basketball team begins their quest for a historic appearance at the FIBA World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda starting today.

Led by seasoned players like Jack Animam and Afril Bernardino, alongside young talents such as UAAP MVP Kacey dela Rosa and Ella Fajardo, the team aims to build on their recent achievements.

In their opening game against Brazil (8th), ranked higher than them at 40th globally, Gilas Women nearly pulled off an upset but fell short with a narrow 77-74 loss.

However, in their second game against world No. 16 Hungary on Tuesday, the team suffered a significant defeat, losing by a score of 97-60.

Jack Animam struggled to replicate her previous performance and scored only 6 points while Afril Bernardino led with 11 points and 4 steals as Gilas Women now face a must-win situation against Senegal on Thursday at 5 pm Manila time.
