Canino leads Alas Pilipinas to historic AVC Challenge Cup semis

Former UAAP women's volleyball MVP Angel Canino made a strong debut as an opposite hitter for Alas Pilipinas in the AVC Challenge Cup, leading the team to a come-from-behind victory over Australia on Thursday.

Canino continued her impressive performance with 17 points in their second match against India and has now scored a game-high 55 points across three matches, securing Alas Pilipinas' place as the first Philippine squad to reach the AVC Challenge Cup semifinals in 63 years.

Both Canino and head coach Jorge Souza de Brito emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication, with Angel's father Rodel, a former national team player, guiding her transition from outside hitter to opposite spiker.

Rodel Canino praised his daughter for playing defense well and contributing significantly to Alas Pilipinas' success, while also expressing gratitude towards the fans who have supported Angel throughout the tournament.

Alas Pilipinas leads Pool A with an unbeaten record after two matches and will face Iran on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they aim to secure a spot in the AVC Challenge Cup finals.
