Makabayan Coalition files certs for 11 progressive senators

The Makabayan Coalition, alongside the Gabriela Women's Party (GWP), has filed certificates of candidacy for eleven senatorial candidates aiming to challenge political dynasties and advocate for labor rights, fisherfolk welfare, healthcare reform, women's rights, government transparency, and anti-political dynasty laws in the 10 May 2025 elections.

The coalition includes leaders from various sectors such as transportation, farmers, teachers, and urban poor groups, each bringing unique perspectives to address key social issues.

Teddy Casiño, a former Bayan Muna Representative, emphasized the importance of getting progressive candidates into the Senate to push for reforms like anti-political dynasty laws and the right to information.

The coalition's platform includes measures to reinforce accountability for graft and corruption, promote national industrialization, advance genuine agrarian reform, and develop the rice industry.

GWP nominee Sarah Elago highlighted her party's commitment to advancing women's health rights and supporting bills such as divorce and SOGIE Equality, along with amendments to strengthen anti-rape and anti-violence against women laws.

As of Friday, October 4, 2024, the senatorial aspirants for the 2025 national elections reached 58, with party-list groups aiming for seats in the lower chamber numbering 50.
