Velasco elected Speaker after 186 lawmakers vote

Lord Allan Velasco was elected as the new Speaker of the House by 186 legislators on Monday, following a term-sharing agreement with Alan Peter Cayetano.

Velasco's election came after 187 of his allies called for an assembly to elect him as Speaker despite the suspension of regular sessions.

Cayetano initially rejected Velasco’s election but later tendered his resignation irrevocably on Facebook Live.

Michael Romero, a known ally of Velasco, was reinstated as deputy speaker and Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte lost his position.

Paolo Duterte, another Cayetano ally, was elected chairman of the House Committee on Accounts.
