Police Major General Nicolas Torre III has been appointed as the new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), effective June 2, succeeding General Rommel Marbil.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla expressed full confidence in Torre, describing him as a tough and action-oriented leader who will bring a "fresh start" to the PNP.
Remulla stressed that Torre's tenure would not involve violations of due process, stating "Arrest at all costs. There will be no extrajudicial killings here."
Torre, currently the director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), was the ground commander of the police team that served an Interpol warrant to arrest former President Rodrigo Duterte last March.
Outgoing PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil stated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. chose Torre based on his leadership qualities and ability to lead the 232,000-strong organization.
Torre will serve until his mandatory retirement on March 11, 2027, becoming the 31st PNP chief.
The Philippine National Police Academy Alumni Association endorsed Torre's promotion as a historic milestone for PNPA graduates.
