PBBM names new PNP chief, cites crime reduction

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that he has chosen the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, describing the appointee as a "very senior officer."

He declined to disclose the name, stating the chosen officer must hear the announcement directly from him before it is made public.

The President assured that the government has a clear plan for the PNP's next steps and wants the incoming chief to continue existing effective strategies in addressing crime.

Marcos noted that Metro Manila has seen a 23 percent decrease in crime in the past six months.

Nationally, index crimes also declined significantly from 15,156 between January 1 to May 16 last year, to 11,493 in the same period this year.

The term of the current PNP Chief, Gen. Rommel Marbil, is set to expire on June 7.
