President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has confirmed his choice for the next Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, who will begin their term after General Rommel Francisco Marbil retires on June 7.
Marcos described the chosen officer as a "very senior officer" and stated he would reveal the identity after speaking with him personally.
Current PNP chief General Marbil expressed confidence that a more senior officer as his successor will ensure the continuation of reforms, internal cleansing, and good service within the PNP.
General Marbil's own term was extended by four months, allowing him to serve beyond the mandatory retirement age and through the 2025 midterm elections.
The President previously highlighted a 23 percent decrease in Metro Manila's crime rate over six months as an ongoing effort the new chief should continue.
This successor will be Marcos' fourth PNP chief and the 31st since the PNP's establishment in 1991.
Among the high-ranking generals reportedly being considered are Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., Lt. Gen. Bernard Banac, Lt. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, and Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin.
