Tolentino seeks probe on Chinese drone found in Masbate

Senator Francis Tolentino has filed Senate Resolution No. 1267 to investigate a submersible drone discovered in Masbate on December 30, 2024, citing potential implications for Philippine national security and territorial integrity.

The six-foot drone, which bears Chinese markings and is suspected to be a Chinese underwater navigation and communication system, is currently undergoing examination by the Philippine Navy.

Tolentino noted that while the drone's yellow color might suggest scientific research, its true purpose needs to be determined.

The investigation will also clarify whether the presence of the drone violated Philippine laws and international maritime laws, specifically the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), regarding coastal state permits for research.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman confirmed that the drone was turned over to the military for further investigation.

Senator Tolentino emphasized that national security extends beyond military concerns to include economic and social aspects, suggesting the drone's research could potentially lead to larger strategic discoveries or resource exploitation.
