PN investigates suspected Chinese drone recovered in Masbate

The Philippine Navy is investigating a remotely operated submersible drone, suspected to be of Chinese origin, recovered by fisherfolk in Masbate on December 30.

Senator Francis Tolentino is pushing for a Senate inquiry into the submersible drone, citing potential serious concerns for Philippine maritime security and legal compliance.

The six-foot drone, made of PVC and metal, was found floating vertically near the coast of Barangay Iniwaran in San Pascual, Masbate.

Preliminary research suggests the drone is a Chinese underwater navigation and communication system, likely used for reconnaissance and surveillance.

Authorities are still determining the drone's specific origin and activities in Philippine waters, with the Armed Forces of the Philippines' investigation ongoing.

The Philippines has increased engagement with countries like the US, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, and the UK amidst China's actions in the West Philippine Sea.
