Sen. Gordon probes overpriced airport COVID-19 tests

Senator Richard Gordon is investigating allegations of overpriced COVID-19 tests at airports, with some passengers reportedly charged up to P20,000 for rapid results.

Gordon, who also chairs the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), stated that the PRC was compelled to set up testing booths due to numerous complaints from OFWs and passengers about high fees and the misuse of their name by private testers.

He mentioned that some individuals are charged P7,000 for tests, with faster results costing P10,000 and the fastest costing up to P20,000.

The Senator suspects passengers are being directed to more expensive testing facilities due to a commission-based scheme, suggesting exploitation.

Gordon expressed his intention to investigate these alleged overcharges by private organizations conducting the tests.

This issue surfaced as the PRC had previously stopped offering COVID-19 tests covered by PhilHealth due to a nearly P1 billion outstanding balance.

Meanwhile, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) stated that the government is offering free COVID-19 testing for arriving OFWs.
