PNP files cases vs 32 for spreading fake news

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has filed cases against 32 individuals for allegedly spreading fake news about the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the enhanced community quarantine began, the PNP has investigated incidents of fake news dissemination.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac warned the public against spreading false information during the health emergency.

He stated that 24 cases were initiated by the PNP anti-cybercrime group (ACG), while other arrests were conducted by local police offices and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

Those arrested face charges for violating Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, as amended in relation to Sec 4c4 (Online Libel) and Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, or the Anti-Cybercrime Law.
