Palace cites UP expert projections in extending Metro Manila GCQ

Malacañang considered the projections of University of the Philippines (UP) experts when deciding to extend the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) status in Metro Manila until June 30.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque admitted that the UP experts' projections seem to be "more or less" happening.

The UP experts had warned that a premature relaxation of quarantine measures may result in the spike of COVID-19 cases by 24,000 by June 15 and 40,000 by June 30.

As of June 15, the Philippines has recorded 26,420 cases, which is already past the figure the UP experts had predicted for that date.

Roque expressed hope that the current GCQ status and localized lockdowns would help mitigate the projected number of cases, aiming to avoid reaching 40,000 by June 30.

The UP study also highlighted that Metro Manila accounts for about 60 percent of active COVID-19 cases.

The UP experts noted a significant backlog of unvalidated and uncategorized cases in the DOH database.
