Mt. Kanlaon erupts, classes suspended in Negros

Classes and work were suspended in some areas near Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island following its explosive eruption on Tuesday, April 8.

The eruption started at 5:51 a.m. and lasted for 56 minutes, causing significant ashfall and darkening the sky in areas like La Carlota City.

Mayor Rex Jalando-on of La Carlota City ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels in public and private schools until further notice, and suspended work in government offices except for disaster response.

Mayor Rhummyla Nicor Mangilimutan of La Castellana had advised children to stay home or in evacuation centers due to ashfall and rumbling sounds.

This was the third eruption of Mt. Kanlaon in the past 10 months, with previous ones occurring on June 3 and December 9 of last year.

About 5,600 individuals remained in evacuation centers following the December 9 eruption, and Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over the volcano.
