Marcos Jr. orders takeover of Siquijor power firm amid poor service

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. announced the government takeover of Siquijor Island Power Corp. (SIPCOR) due to a lack of improvement in its power supply services.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordered the shutdown of SIPCOR after it violated multiple operational and regulatory requirements.

President Marcos stated that the takeover was necessary as SIPCOR's operations showed no progress in providing electricity to Siquijor.

The Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative (PROSIELCO) will now supply power to the island, with the ERC and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) overseeing the transition.

President Marcos led the ceremonial switch-on of the new 17.8-megawatt power plant, which is projected to supply more than the island's nine-megawatt requirement.

He had previously visited Siquijor on June 11 to assess its longstanding issues of power outages.
