Govt to allot P5B for COVID-19 aid to formal sector workers

The government is allocating P5 billion for social amelioration programs aimed at assisting formal sector workers impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) has endorsed the budget request from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

This funding will support programs such as the COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP), Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) Sanitation Project, and the Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) sa OFWs program.

Beneficiaries of these DOLE programs must be distinct from those receiving aid from other government agencies, like the Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) Emergency Subsidy Program.

DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III anticipates that approximately 1.8 million Filipino workers might be affected by the pandemic's economic fallout.

Previously, the department had already disbursed around P514 million to 102,855 formal workers and P107 million to 72,703 informal workers.

Under the CAMP, eligible workers will receive P5,000 in cash, to be distributed through their employers' payroll systems.

DOLE aims to assist 115,000 formal workers and 235,000 informal workers with additional funds, involving P579 million and P963 million respectively.
