DOH identifies 297 non-operational super health centers

The Department of Health (DOH) identified 297 non-operational or uncompleted 'super health centers' (SHCs) nationwide, out of over 500 built under its Health Facilities Enhancement Program.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa revealed that one SHC in Marikina City is incomplete, with only Phase 1 of a planned four-storey building finished.

Herbosa stated that P21 million was allotted for the Marikina project, which was inserted into the DOH budget, but the contractor has not handed over construction plans, hindering the start of Phase Two.

He described the situation as a 'waste of money' as the funds have been stagnant and the facility has not served any patients.

The DOH will submit the list of these 297 'ghost' health facilities to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) tomorrow, where Herbosa is scheduled to testify.

Herbosa has instructed DOH regional directors to identify all delayed and non-operational health projects in their jurisdictions.

The construction of SHCs began in 2021, but nearly 300 remain uncompleted or non-operational today.
