Comelec may suspend BSKE preparations due to term extension bill

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is considering suspending preparations for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled for December.

This consideration follows the Senate and House of Representatives' ratification of a bill extending the term of incumbent barangay and SK officials from three to six years.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia mentioned an emergency meeting next week to determine which preparations, such as the purchase of indelible ink, should be halted first due to potential expiration.

Voter registration, initially set for July 1 to 11, is also being considered for postponement, with discussions on the budget implications.

If the BSKE is rescheduled, Comelec may implement an extended voter registration period after the October Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliamentary elections, potentially lasting until August next year.
