Namfrel opposes BSKE postponement

The National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) opposes the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

NAMFREL emphasizes that regular elections for the barangay, the closest government unit to the people, are crucial for citizens to choose their leaders.

The election watchdog also highlighted the significance of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in empowering youth and ensuring their participation in governance.

A bill passed by the House of Representatives on third and final reading proposes to reset the BSKE and extend the term of officials from three to four years.

The bill also seeks to synchronize the BSKE starting in 2029, to be held every six years on the second Monday of May, and amends sections of the Local Government Code of 1991 regarding term limits.
