BOC seizes P476M shabu from US-bound balikbayan boxes

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized approximately 70 kilograms of suspected shabu, valued at P476 million, hidden within three balikbayan boxes originating from Long Beach, California.

The boxes were intercepted at a consolidator warehouse in Tondo, Manila, and were declared as household products.

The shipment was consigned to a residential address in Bacoor City, Cavite.

The seized drugs were found concealed in varying amounts within the boxes: 24 kilograms hidden in a small box and a backpack, another 27 kilograms in a second backpack, and 19 kilograms mixed with personal items in a third box.

Customs examiners detected the suspicious contents after x-ray screening and inspection.

BOC commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno stated that this seizure was not the result of an intelligence report but standard operating procedure.

He also noted that shipments from the southern United States are classified as high risk, prompting closer scrutiny.
