Mary Jane Veloso may return to Philippines under prisoner transfer policy

Filipina death row inmate Mary Jane Veloso may be transferred back to the Philippines through Indonesia's 'transfer of prisoner' policy after 14 years in jail.

Indonesia is considering the transfer following discussions between Philippine Ambassador Gina Alagon Jamoralin and ongoing talks between both countries, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. potentially granting clemency based on humanitarian grounds.

Veloso’s family and legal counsel are hopeful that a mutually agreed solution will be announced soon to benefit Veloso and her family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed they are working towards this solution, while Indonesian media reported that the government is discussing the issue internally and with President Prabowo Subianto.

Veloso was convicted in 2010 for drug trafficking after being caught with heroin but has maintained her innocence as a human trafficking victim; the Philippine government has repeatedly sought her release.
