Indonesia set to transfer Mary Jane Veloso to Phil prison in Dec

Indonesia is set to initiate the process of transferring Mary Jane Veloso to a Philippine prison in December 2024, pending fulfillment of certain conditions.

Veloso has been on death row for over a decade after being sentenced to death in 2010 for smuggling heroin into Indonesia.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. claims that government efforts have led to the commutation of Veloso's death sentence to life imprisonment, though details of her transfer and detention are still under discussion with Indonesian authorities.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega confirmed that once Jakarta makes its final decision, the Philippines will meet with Indonesia to discuss specifics of Veloso’s transfer and detention conditions.

Domestic groups like the National Union of People's Lawyers and Migrante have welcomed Veloso's expected return but are urging the government to grant her clemency on humanitarian grounds and due to the absence of the death penalty in the Philippines.
