SC rules VP Sara Duterte's latest impeachment unconstitutional

Vice President Sara Duterte's defense team welcomed the Supreme Court's decision declaring the Articles of Impeachment against her unconstitutional for violating the one-year bar under the Constitution.

The court's unanimous ruling affirmed that the 4th impeachment complaint lacks constitutional grounds, upholding the rule of law and reinforcing constitutional limits on the impeachment process.

Duterte's legal team stated they remain prepared to address any allegations against her at an appropriate time and forum.

Law firm Torreon and Partners also welcomed the SC decision, emphasizing its importance in protecting democratic institutions and upholding due process.

Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting clarified that while the ruling does not absolve Duterte from any charges, subsequent impeachment complaints may only be filed starting February 6, 2026.

Several lawmakers expressed differing opinions on the high court's decision, with some arguing it undermines accountability and others welcoming it as a necessary upholding of constitutional limits.
