Bayan, others protest SC ruling on VP Sara impeachment

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and various groups protested in Quezon City on Saturday over the Supreme Court's ruling declaring the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional.

Protest leaders argue that the decision undermines justice and accountability, prioritizing technicalities over substance, with Bayan chairperson Teddy Casiño calling it 'erroneous' and 'insidious'.

The SC ruled that the articles violated constitutional provisions against initiating more than one impeachment complaint against an official in a year.

Bayan Secretary-General Mong Palatino said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is partly to blame for the delay in proceedings due to his opposition to impeachment, while Akbayan Representative Perci Cendaña urged Congress to assert its independence and continue legal means to pursue the trial.

Groups plan to hold a rally during Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address on July 28 to voice their grievances against the administration.
