PISTON set for 3-day transport strike against PUV modernization

PISTON announced a three-day nationwide strike starting November 20, 2023, in protest of the government's public utility vehicle modernization program.

The union claims the program favors large corporations and cooperatives over small operators, potentially leading to monopolies on PUV routes.

Despite appeals from authorities for PISTON to cancel the strike, Mody Floranda, PISTON president, said members will surrender their franchises temporarily during the protest.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) spokesperson Celine Pialago emphasized that around half of jeepney operators have already consolidated their franchises in support of the modernization initiative and stressed the welfare of passengers is paramount.
