DOTr: Jeepney consolidation non-negotiable despite strike demands

The DOTr emphasized on Wednesday that jeepney driver and operator consolidation into cooperatives or corporations is non-negotiable as part of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista stated that while the government is willing to address most demands of striking transport groups, including extending PUV franchises to five years, consolidation remains a requirement.

Drivers and operators are protesting against the high costs associated with transitioning to Euro 4-compliant vehicles, which can exceed P2 million.
