DOH reports 3,109 new COVID cases, 61 deaths; NCR ICU nears critical

As of Sunday, Aug 9, 2020, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,109 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, bringing the total number of cases to 129,913.

The majority of newly announced cases are from Metro Manila with 1,700 cases, followed by Laguna with 169 cases, Cebu with 114 cases, Rizal with 98 cases, and Cavite with 93 cases.

DOH also reported 61 new deaths and 654 recoveries on Sunday, increasing the number of total recoveries to 67,673 and the death toll to 2,270.

Currently, more than half of the country's ICU beds for Covid-19 cases are occupied with NCR nearing critical levels at 73 percent ICU occupancy, 76 percent isolation bed occupancy, and 86 percent ward bed occupancy.

Calabarzon remains a significant concern, with some 67 percent of about 179 ICU beds, 60 percent of 1,400 isolation beds, and 69 percent of 512 ward beds occupied. Meanwhile, Aklan recorded its first virus death on Friday, August 7.

The government is currently implementing the second phase of its National Action Plan (NAP) against COVID-19 which includes scaling up healthcare capacity and hiring around 10,000 more health workers.
