Obiena places fifth at Wanda Diamond League in Shanghai

Filipino Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena placed fifth at the Wanda Diamond League event in Shanghai, China on Saturday, May 3.

Obiena cleared only 5.72 meters and tied with Australia's Kurtis Marshall but dropped to fifth place due to countback rules after needing two attempts at the same height.

Swedish athlete Mondo Duplantis won gold by clearing 6.11 meters, while Greece's Emmanouil Karalis secured silver with a clearance of 6.01 meters.

Netherlands' Menno Vloon came in third with a clearance of 5.82 meters.

Despite failing to clear 5.82 meters on three attempts, Obiena showed improvement from his seventh-place finish last week in Xiamen where he cleared only 5.62 meters.

Obiena has not reached 5.80m since ruling the ORLEN Copernicus Cup in February.
