MMDA eyes converting EDSA bus lane to HOV lane

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is considering plans to phase out the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) bus lane during a meeting at Malacañang Palace.

During discussions with President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr., MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes suggested converting the EDSA bus lane into a special lane for high-occupancy vehicles, citing the redundancy of having buses and trains on similar routes.

The Department of Transportation's expansion plans to increase MRT capacity by 30 percent make the bus lane less necessary, according to Artes.

Artes emphasized that freeing up one lane would ease traffic congestion without inconveniencing commuters if MRT operations are improved.

EDSA will undergo rehabilitation in March to enhance riding quality and potentially reduce traffic congestion, with the ideal daily vehicle count at 250,000 but currently exceeding 470,000.
