Lawmakers condemn VP Sara’s SC petition to halt impeachment

Makabayan bloc and other lawmakers have condemned Vice President Sara Duterte's camp for filing a petition before the Supreme Court to halt the impeachment proceedings, calling it an act of desperation.

Gabriela party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas noted that Duterte previously welcomed the impeachment but is now backtracking on her earlier statements, indicating fear of accountability.

House leaders such as Deputy Speaker David 'Jay-Jay' Suarez and Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio 'Dong' Gonzales Jr., along with Assistant Majority Leader Jude Acidre, have criticized Duterte's move to evade accountability through legal means.

Senior Deputy Speaker Gonzales suggested that the allegations against Duterte are true given her fear of an impending impeachment trial and the potential release of bank records.

Deputy Speaker Suarez emphasized that the House will not be deterred by legal theatrics and will continue to uphold its constitutional mandate, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

Lawmakers stress that Vice President Duterte's move to halt the impeachment trial through the courts only raises more questions about what she is trying to hide, as recent surveys show strong public support for her facing a Senate trial.
