Hontiveros balances history with impartiality in Duterte impeachment

Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros stated Wednesday, February 26, that her past opinions and knowledge of Vice President Sara Duterte could influence her decision during the impeachment trial.

Hontiveros emphasized her commitment to impartiality and fairness in evaluating evidence, despite their complex history.

She acknowledged forming a judgment over the years based on Duterte's performance regarding issues previously investigated or debated, some of which are grounds for impeachment.

Hontiveros noted that convicting Duterte could prevent another Duterte from assuming the presidency in 2028 and provide victim-survivors with justice.

The opposition lawmaker highlighted the potential collision between past and future if the trial proceeds, offering a measure of justice and accountability to those who have been denied it.

Hontiveros also pointed out that most Senate investigations have focused on former President Rodrigo Duterte, but she will separate their cases.
